He said the specialist doctors should get salaries as per their qualification as currently their salary is similar to that of MBBS doctors. They also seek hike in allowances like academic allowance and rural area allowance.

Dr KS Sohal said, “From April 15 onwards, all the specialist doctors working in the government hospitals will wear black badges to mark their protest. If government fails to step forward to seek solution to their demands, pen down strike from 11am to 1pm on April 22, 25 and 28 will be held and rallies will also be conducted in all the government hospitals.”

He said if their protest fails to leave an impact on the government, then from May 1, the specialist doctors will do only the job of the MBBS doctors and no major surgeries will be performed.

Govt sponsored PG doctors not to get NPA

Now the government doctors, who do their postgraduation through government sponsored programmes, won't get non-practising allowance (NPA). Official orders in this regard have been issued by principal health secretary Vini Mahajan.

The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMS) doctors have condemned this move of the government. State president of PCMS Doctors Association, Dr Hardeep Singh said, “NPA is like basic pay and every government employee has the right to get the basic pay atleast. The government is making new policies on its own, which are harming the medical profession as youngsters don't want to join government services.”

Dr Hardeep Singh said, “It's not a justified move and the association condemns this. A doctor who goes for postgraduation studies also do practice at the respective medical college and thus contribute to work. Thus, he is entitled to get non-practising allowance.”

Dr KS Sohal of PCMS Specialist Doctors Association also condemned the move of government and said that this will discourage the other doctors to join government services.
