After the photos became public, experts predicted Musk would discuss how the Interplanetary Transport System could be used to build human presence on Earth’s Moon.

SpaceX has previously talked about how it is developing the interplanetary rocket and capsule to transport humans and cargo to Mars to eventually colonise the planet.

Musk said last year he envisioned humans living in a large colony on Mars, but added that the key would be getting the cost low enough to attract willing stakeholders. He founded SpaceX specifically with the purpose of colonising Mars. The company is one of several private and government funded ventures working with similar objectives.

Mars, the nearly airless planet, is about 140 million miles from Earth the journey to the planet would take around six to nine months.

On Thursday, the European Space Agency said setting up a permanent village on the Moon was the first step towards exploring Mars.

At an annual gathering of 4,000 global space experts in Adelaide, the ESA said the Moon was the “right place to be” as humans expand economic activities beyond low-Earth orbit, even while Mars remained the “ultimate destination”.
