Gallery forced to recall Husain works

A Worli-based art gallery withdrew paintings of MF Husain after the Akhil Bharat Hindumahasabha (ABH) warned of protests if the artist’s works were displayed at an exhibition.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the ABH said that its representatives met the manager of Tao Art Gallery and conveyed their disapproval of Husain’s paintings being included in the exhibition.
The statement signed by Dinesh Bhogale said: “When we told the gallery we are objecting only to Husain’s paintings, they were promptly taken off. We have told them we will protest if the paintings are displayed in future.”
The art gallery, however, did not elaborate on the issue. “They (ABH) did visit us and everything has been sorted out,” said an employee who refused to reveal her identity. “No such exhibition was scheduled.”
The Hindumahasabha issued its warning on Monday, asking the gallery to rethink its decision to include the controversial artist’s paintings in the exhibition.
