Royal art on display

It is not every day that history is put out in the open for one to see, touch, feel and take home. But as part of the fourth edition of Royal Fables — an exhibition to promote designers, artists and craft patrons of royal descent — regal designs and artefacts will be reproduced by 23 blue-blooded scions of India for the modern day collector to buy. “Royal Fables demystifies intricate designs of the past to a modern realm. The cornerstone of the initiative is relevance, fusion chic, affordability and functionality - suitably decked with the glamour of exclusive lineages,” says Anshu Khanna, the founder of the exhibit.

“I’ll showcase paintings and miniature artefacts in traditional Rajasthani and Kishangarh styles made by local artists. The aim of my studio is to give employment and patronage to these artisans for the work they do. Most of the things which will be put on sale are inspired by traditional art forms but made for modern homes,” says Princess Vaishnavi Kumari of Kishangarh. Jewellery designer Rani Kavita Singh of Jodhpur says, “From regal reflection to elegance, there’s something for each disposition in my collection. The inspiration lies in the simplicity of creating something that appeals to all women.” The event, which opens tomorrow, will not just see regal traditions in the form of quilts, upholstery, jewellery and paintings but also saris, achkans, sherwanis, brocades and lehngas. “I am revivalist. My collection is inspired by classic royal costumes which have been handed down through generations,” says Umang Hutheesing, who will be putting on display his bridal collection this season.
