Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav claimed that Narendra Modi was copying clothes worn by others, a day after the Prime Minister alleged that exam centres were being auctioned in UP for copying, while BSP supremo Mayawati said Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah were “guru-chela” who were “dreaming of harming” Uttar Pradesh.

At rallies in Siddharthnagar and Santkabirnagar, Akhilesh said, “Prime Minister, you are telling me about copying in examinations, in education... Who is copying by wearing clothes worth lakhs of rupees?”

“There was a very big man who had worn a suit which had his name on it... I want to ask the BJP people who was the first person who wore a suit with his name? I will say you people have also copied,” Akhilesh said.

Modi had worn a pinstripe monogrammed suit during the visit of US President Barack Obama in 2015. The suit, which kicked up a political storm, was later sold at an auction for Rs 4.31 crore.

Alleging that the Samajwadi Party manifesto was copied by the BJP, Akhilesh said, “Who has not copied a little bit in examinations for passing? Raise your hands and tell me who has not copied in their childhood for passing? PM (Modi), you are also copying different things.

“It seems as if everyone here is passing by copying... even the toppers,” he said.

Addressing a rally in Gonda on Friday, Modi alleged that tenders were floated to encourage adoption of wrong practices in examinations, like mass copying.

On Modi’s retort to his “donkey” remark, Akhilesh said, “In Bahraich, the Prime Minister gave a 10-minute speech on donkey and BJP leaders told me that UP CM does not know the specialty of donkey... tell me does any one of you want to know about it.”

“... they are going towards graveyard and cremation ground and talking about holi and diwali... SP people are the ones who work towards promoting brotherhood and uniting people,” Akhilesh said.

In Deoria, Mayawati said, “Guru and chela have together harmed the country... ‘guru’ means Modi and ‘chela’ means Shah... now, they together are dreaming of harming the state.”

BJP leaders have been referring to Mayawati and Akhilesh as “bua-bhatija” (aunt and nephew).

Mayawati asked Muslims to vote “en masse” for the BSP. “… if Muslims vote for the BSP, the BJP will get a setback and it will not be able to come to power in the state”.

She also alleged that BJP will “end reservation by following the RSS agenda” or will make it ineffective.

On the SP-Congress alliance, the BSP chief said, “The Samajwadi Party is considered symbolic to crime, corruption and ‘jungle raj’. People have to decide whether they will vote for the tainted face of SP-Congress or the clean one of the BSP, which has shown how the rule of law is imposed.”
