But cops suspect that Kumar was eyeing to change the demonetised notes into new currency notes with help of his younger brother Anurag Thakur, who is working at the same private bank branch in Itarsi where Kumar was to deposit the notes.

Itarsi police station in-charge Bhupendra Maurya said the man from Bihar deboarded from Patliputra-Bengaluru Sanghmitra Express train at 3.30 pm on Tuesday. After coming out from the station, Kumar was standing near the private bank branch where Anurag works.

“Acting on a specific tip-off, we caught Kumar, checked his bag and found Rs 20.78 lakh all in defunct Rs 1000 currency notes.,” said Maurya. He added that Anurag was also questioned before being allowed to go.

“We suspect that Kumar could have been planning to get the demonetized currency converted into new currency notes with his bank employee brother’s help. We’ve informed the Income Tax department for further action in the matter,” Maurya added.
