Many policemen are reported to have been injured in the attack which took place at Bambhori village of Chhatarpur district, about 330 kilometres from Bhopal. The situation is tense and the police are trying to bring it under control, said additional superintendent of police (SP) Neeraj Pandey.

The situation turned tense when the villagers recovered the body of a youth Devendra Sen (27) bearing injury marks on Saturday morning from a well.

Villagers alleged that the youth had been caught, tortured and thrown into a well by the local police on Friday night after a raid on a gambling den. The kin of the deceased also alleged that the police even turned them away when they went to the police post to lodge a complaint on Saturday morning.

The additional SP, however, denied that Bambhori police caught any group of gamblers. The youth might have fallen into the well when somebody raised a false alarm about a raiding police team, he said.

Earlier, the villagers had laid siege to the police post, trapping at least half a dozen police personnel inside and pelted them with stones. The police resorted to firing in the air and lobbing tear gas shells to disperse the villagers but in vain, sources said. The villagers even ignored local BJP MLA Rekha Yadav’s appeals for peace.
