MP: Tansen Samaroh countdown begins

The five-day Tansen Samaroh, one of the oldest music festivals held in India, will begin in Gwalior on Wednesday.

The five-day Tansen Samaroh, one of the oldest music festivals held in India, will begin in Gwalior on Wednesday. Scores of musicians and artistes from all over the country will take part in the music festival to showcase their talent.

The festival will see traditional Milad and Hari Katha recitations during morning sessions. The concluding part event will be organised at legendary musician Tansen’s birthplace, Behat, located some 45 km from Gwalior on the bank of river Jhilmil. Tansen was the court musician of the famous Mughal emperor Akbar in the 16th century.

The Tansen Sammans for 2014 and 2015 will be conferred on Padma Shri Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Padma Shri Pt Ajay Chakrawarti respectively, for their contribution towards classical music. Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar will attend the inaugural function.

A total of 38 artistes, including local artistes from Gwalior and Bhopal will participate in the event, programme manager Rahul Rastogi said. Several foreign artistes, including groups from France and Bulgaria, will participate in the programme this year.

“The stage has been designed on the lines of the Bateshwar temple this year. The oval-shaped architecture at temple site (resembling Parliament building) known as Chousath Yogini Mandi (64 female ascetic temple) encompasses a Shivlinga embodied on temple pillars will be replicated with 3D lighting on the stage,” Rastogi said.

A photo exhibition on Tansen’s life will also be will be put up near the main dome.
