The two trolleys attached to the tractor overturned while it was moving down a steep slope, police said.
All the deceased were from Katangi and Paloha village in Narsinghpur district and were going to Harsiddhi Devi temple at Rangir for immersing the 'Jawara', Gourjhamar police said.
The incident happened when the tractor was moving down the Neem Ghati slope near Gopalpura village around 3.30pm. The driver allegedly lost control and the vehicle overturned killing six people.
The dead were identified as Rewa Bai, 50, Lalchand, 62, Sandeep, 10, Ankit, 6, Rajkumar, 16, Durgesh, 6.
The 49 injured were rushed to Deori community health centre, where they were administered preliminary treatment. Eight people who sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Narsinghpur hospital.
"It looks like the tractor driver had neutralised the gear and it picked up speed while going down the steep slope and lost control," Deori sub-divisional office PL Raj told newsmen. Police have registered a case in the matter.
