When it comes to Hindi film actors romancing South stars, age is just a number.

Mohanlal, 50 and Vidya Balan, 33
Vidya Balan has signed a satirical comedy titled Arabiyum Ottakavum P Madhavan Nairum, featuring southern actors Mohanlal and Mukesh. Though the film is set in Abu Dhabi and majority of it will be shot there, the story will start from Thiruvananthapuram. Director Priyadar-shan chose to be tight-lipped about the film: “It is too early to talk about it. I cannot reveal anything at this point.”

Kamal Hassan, 56 and Sonakshi Sinha, 23
Dabangg beauty Sonakshi Sinha is expected to play the female lead in a tri-lingual film (Hindi, Tamil and Telugu) opposite Kamal Hassan. The film, yet to be titled, is directed by Selvaraghavan and will go on floors this April. Hassan is keen on signing Sinha and will soon discuss the script with her. The film is based on 2001’s Hollywood release Hannibal, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore.

Rajinikanth, 61 and Deepika Padukone, 25 in Rana
Deepika Padukone has finally signed her first Tamil film, Rana, with Rajinikanth. Initially, she delayed signing on the dotted line due to her commitments, but she later made some adjustments and has officially signed this film, directed by KS Ravi Kumar. Deepika had said that her dream of pairing up with Rajini has come true with this film. Deepika started her career in Kannada with the movie Aishwarya, opposite Upendra. She was also seen in an item number in Telugu film Love 4 Ever. The film will go on floors, in March and is expected to hit the theatres mid 2012.

Bollywood superstars paired with South Indian heroines

Ajay Devgn, 41 and Kajal Aggarwal, 25
Southern actor Kajal Aggarwal has been finalised as the female lead opposite Ajay Devgn in Rohit Shetty’s next. The film is a Hindi remake of the Tamil superhit Singham. Kajal, who will be playing Ajay’s love interest, has many successful films to her credit, down south. But she rose to prominence with her performance in 2009’s Telugu super hit Magadheera. “She is very popular down south. We are confident about her pulling off the role successfully,” says Shetty. Singham is all set to go on floors this month.

Amitabh Bachchan, 68 and Taapsee Pannu, 22
Taapsee, who made her debut in K Raghavendra Rao’s Jhummandi Naadam, has now shifted her focus to Bollywood and has signed Ram Gopal Varma’s forthcoming venture Buddha, featuring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. Though Tabu is playing the lead in the film, Taapsee has a pivotal role to play too. She was recently in the news for exposing a lot in a song sequence for her upcoming film Vastadu Naa Raju.

SRK, 45 and a southern actor (not finalised yet)
Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is scouting for a south Indian beauty to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan in his next, as-yet-untitled film. The character of the female lead in the film must possess good knowledge of Tamil. So, the director wants a south Indian actor to essay the role for the character to look real. Though auditions have begun, they have not yet zeroed in on any name. Watch this space for the confirmed name.
