Award-winning actor-filmmaker Nandita Das believes in bringing strong, powerful subjects on screen, just like her next film, I Am, which highlights the intolerance of society.

"The director Onir is a very brave and sensitive man, and he’s had the courage to bring out four strong stories," she says, adding, "For now, I am not doing any more films, but I am looking forward to directing more. I want to bring strong, powerful subjects on screen."

About her character in I Am, Nandita, who has an eight-month old son, says, "I play a woman who wants to be a mother. It was very strange, because I was five months pregnant while shooting."

"The film is about personal choices and how we as a society are intolerant to others. Whether it is religion, sex or identity. Can we, as a society, be more tolerant? I explored the concept earlier in Fire and in my directorial venture Firaaq," explains Nandita.

She also clears the air about her avoiding commercial cinema, stating, "People ask me why I don’t feature in commercial films, but my reason is very simple. I am fortunate that I am able to do the kind of work that I love doing, because I find a direct connect with it."
