I am not PR savvy: Kareena Kapoor Khan

After being part of the industry for 15 years, Kareena Kapoor Khan says that controversies and gossips don’t affect her anymore.

She usually keeps a low profile when she doesn’t have a film to promote, and Kareena Kapoor Khan says that she likes it that way. The actor, whose recent release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, is doing well at the box office, says that she is not very PR savvy. Here, the 34-year-old actor talks about the importance of striking a balance, her “talented” cousin, actor Ranbir Kapoor, and more.

You’ve always said that being in love is the best feeling, and being married has made you content. Do you think it’s time for Ranbir (Kapoor; actor-cousin) to tie the knot as well?
People should do what works for them. Also, I’m nobody to give anybody any sort of advice, especially about one’s life. It’s totally their own decision to decide what they want.

On the career front, Ranbir’s past few releases haven’t done very well…
I don’t think an actor like Ranbir will be affected. He is way above that. He has his biggest weapon, which is his talent. Hits and flops are part of an actor’s journey, and he is going to have a career for the next 30 to 40 years with the kind of talent he has. A couple of flops won’t bog him down. He has an illustrious career ahead of him. He is fine, and it’s all part of the game.

Why is it that barring film promotions, we don’t see much of you?
I am not very PR savvy. I’m actually very bad at it. My PR manager keeps calling me and telling me that we should do interviews, this and that, and I’m like, “No, maybe during a movie.” It’s not that there has to be a story every single day in the newspapers. Most of the times, I’m like, “Why?”

You always say that marriage has changed you for the better. How much has Saif (Ali Khan) changed from being a boyfriend to a husband?
He’s a better husband. He is lovely. Everyone knows he is extremely charming. He is a lot more grounded and responsible now.

Every day, something or the other is written about you in the newspapers. How easy or difficult is it to be unaffected by the attention?
After 15 years, I’m unfazed. I don’t want to hear anything, I don’t want to be too much into it or too much out of it. And with too many people in this industry socialising together, it also becomes incestuous after a point. Do a bit of it, and move out. You’ve got to strike a balance. If you go too deep into it, it will suck you in. So, sometimes, it’s nice to be cut off. I don’t get sucked into these things. I have my few friends who I love, but I don’t socialise or go for too many parties or trials. I like to keep it that way. It’s not that I don’t have friends; there are people I meet and love, and they will always be part of my life, but I can’t be sucked in, that’s for sure.

You’re doing a film with Arjun (Kapoor). What do you think of him?
It’s nice that I can work with Salman (Khan), on one hand, and Arjun on the other. Arjun is an amazing person, and a dear friend. He’s an intense, deep and strong person. So, I think that will help him in his career. I like his attitude.

Haven’t you ever thought of teaming up with your sister (Karisma Kapoor) on screen?
I don’t know if Lolo (Karisma) is keen [at the moment] with the kids keeping her busy. I would love to, and it would be an honour for me to work alongside my sister. She’s my biggest idol. [But] we’ve not really thought about it.

It must also be getting tedious and repetitive to do back-to-back interviews during film promotions?
I try to make it refreshing. And that’s why, I think that because people don’t see me that often, when they do meet me, at least we can have a conversation. There’s something to talk about. Otherwise, when you put out too many stories, and are constantly in the media, or on social media, there’s nothing to [talk about]. How much more can you say? This way it keeps me excited.
