Janhvi Kapoor found a special way to honour her mother, Sridevi as she posthumously won her first National Film Award on Thursday.

In a touching gesture, Janhvi Kapoor chose a saree from Sridevi’s collection as she accompanied father Boney Kapoor and sister Khushi Kapoor to accept National Film Award for Best Actress that was conferred on her mother posthumously. Sridevi won the award for revenge drama, MOM; the actor died in February this year.

Manish Malhotra, Sridevi’s close friend and favourite fashion designer, wrote on Instagram, “The very pretty Janhvi Kapoor as she goes to receive Sridevi ma’am’s much deserved National Award for her fabulous performance in MOM. An actress and a human being and the friend that we all miss every day of our life’s. Janhvi Kapoor in her mom’s personal saree for this emotional and precious moment.”

Janhvi looked like a mirror image of her late mother in the pink-and-white Kanjivaram silk saree. Khushi chose to wear a half-saree, better know as pattu pavadai, for the Vigyan Bhavan event. Speaking to news channels earlier, Boney said, “Sridevi would have been very happy today. We miss her, it is a very proud moment at the same time. She would have been happy, very happy being here. We feel elated, proud that she’s been recognised for the hard work she’s put in this film.”

In the movie, directed by Ravi Udyawar, Sridevi played a mother who sets out to avenge her step-daughter, essayed by Pakistani actor Sajal Ali.

Boney expressed his gratitude towards the Indian government, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the jury, which was led by Sridevi’s “Mr. India” director Shekhar Kapur.

Janhvi will make her Bollywood debut later this year in Dhadak, opposite Ishaan Khatter. The film is directed by Shashank Khaitan.

The 65th National Awards were held in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on May 3.
