With women-centric films such as The Dirty Picture, Turning 30, No One Killed Jessica and 7 Khoon Maaf, 2011 can be titled as the year that celebrated women power on the silver screen.

“The protagonists in my movies were two leading ladies who were very powerful in whatever they did. It’s not easy to make a film on such a theme, but times are changing and people are accepting women as their heroes,” says Rajkumar Gupta, director of No One Killed Jessica. “For sure, big screen has celebrated women power from NOKJ to The Dirty Picture, and now upcoming films like Kahaani are like a benchmark in this male-dominated industry,” says filmmaker Ramesh Taurani.

“Todays leading ladies have successfully converted what used to be called arthouse cinema of ’80s to commercial success of 2011. I also credit the filmmakers for giving such powerful roles to the actors such as Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra,” says film expert Atul Mohan.

Female Filmamkers rocked!

Ekta Kapoor hit headlines for her production The Dirty Picture and made it to Forbes list as the youngest most powerful women. “I’m proud that Balaji was one of the first production house that employed maximum women employees.”

Zoya Akhtar’s debut Luck By Chance failed to create magic at the box office but her latest release Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara swept the award functions.

“I am glad that women power is getting acknowledged,” she said. Alankrita Shrivastava who directed actor Gul Panag starrer Turning 30 says, “The male bastion of the film industry is finally changing. This change is very heartening. But its not time to rest on our laurels. Its time to move ahead boldly into the future, with courage and pride.”
