Validation may be a strong word, but actress Richa Chadda doesn't tire of using it at the drop of a hat these days. Her decision to play the lead in Neeraj Ghaywan's film Masaan, which releases this Friday, was instinctive and totally based on the pull of a powerful script.

Validation may be a strong word, but actress Richa Chadda doesn't tire of using it at the drop of a hat these days. Her decision to play the lead in Neeraj Ghaywan's film Masaan, which releases this Friday, was instinctive and totally based on the pull of a powerful script. That the film won two coveted awards at the Cannes International Film Festival and a standing ovation from the audience at a special screening there, she says, was validation enough of her blind faith in Ghaywan. "When Neeraj came to me with the concept, he didn’t have any backing for the film. But when I read the script, I knew straightaway that this is one film I shouldn’t miss out on. Later, we found backing for the film and now, I am very happy to be a part of Masaan," says Richa.

Playing a traumatised small town girl in the film, she says, was never easy. "I didn't meet a long list of people to prepare for the role. I didn't meet any criminal or a murderer, but we do prepare for such roles based on our understanding of the situation. It’s not like I went on a hunt for traumatised girls from small towns. We needed to understand the rural-urban divide and prepare accordingly."

Talking about the tough role, Richa says: "It’s about a small town girl who is going through a lot in her life. She has been persecuted by people around her and that has led to a situation where she is facing a moral dilemma. The morality crisis is the theme around which my character is based," adds Richa.

Richa explains the film’s global appeal and the meaning of being appreciated at Cannes. "I am happy that our films are leaving impression globally. This should be seen as the recognition to alternate cinema. It’s not an out and out commercial film which would easily find takers, so these achievements mean a lot to us."

The actor, who will next be seen in Aur Devdas, adds: "Masaan is a universal story and awards at prestigious film festivals only put a stamp on our belief. It’s a very rooted film. It’s not something that will get lost in translation."
