Family says the veteran actor is recovering, but won’t be home in time for his birthday.

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar turns 76 today. But his family is sceptical about planning a celebration at home for his birthday as Kumar is still in the hospital. The actor was admitted when he complained of pain in his gall bladder on Sunday night. His older son, Vishal, says that Kumar is apparently better and is recovering well, but his discharge from the hospital will depend upon the completion of the treatment.

“He will be discharged tomorrow or day after. So, his birthday celebration will depend entirely upon that,” says Vishal, adding, “Treatment is still on for his gall bladder stones. We are waiting for the completion of that process. We’re just hoping that he gets discharged tomorrow.”

The actor-filmmaker, who is revered for playing patriotic roles during the 60s and ’70s, has served the Hindi film industry for five decades. He is remembered for films like PurabAur Paschim (1970), Shor (1972), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Kranti (1981), Upkar (1967) and Patthar Ke Sanam (1967), among others. Not many people know that Kumar was the first person to receive a National Award for screenplay for the film Shaheed (1965) that was based on Bhagat Singh.
