Salman Khan is hungry for more hits
His latest film Kick is a hit, but Salman Khan wants to do a lot more with his career. Reminiscing about the time when he would shoot for three different films in one day, the actor explains why that doesn’t happen anymore.

The industry has changed a lot since your debut, over two decades ago. What do you miss the most?
I miss shooting for three-four films [simultaneously], and having four-five releases in a year.
But wasn’t that more taxing?
No. I can’t figure out why it’s more hectic now. I’m working twice as much as I would work when I was shooting three films every day. I had three shifts [daily] till Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Biwi No. 1 (1999), which were all shot together.

But you have releases every year…
I want to do them (movies) simultaneously. Now what? I’m getting one release in a year-and-a-half. It’s not like I’m getting a release every six months. Plus, we would work hard when we were making Rs 2-3 lakh per movie. This is the time we should be working like that. When the prices are in crores, we’re doing one film a year.
Bade bewakoof hain saare actors
(all actors are really stupid).
So, will we see you get back in that groove?
I want to, but I don’t know how we’ll manage it now. I don’t even know how I managed it then.
Meri toh chhodo
(leave me aside), the stars before us would do 65-70 films. Mithun
da
(Chakraborty) and Dharam
ji
(Dharmendra) did around 115 films (sic). How did they manage their dates? And those were three- and four-hero films.
During No Entry (2005), I heard Boney Kapoor (producer) saying, ‘
Sab ke dates mil gaye lekin junior artistes ke dates nahin mile’
(all the actors had given dates, but junior artistes weren’t available on those days). We had to cancel the whole schedule. Most of the time now, we can’t even take TV actors, because we don’t get their dates.
Actor baitha hai, because uske paas ek picture hai
(the lead actor is waiting because he has one movie). It’s the other guys (who are busy).
