His highly-acclaimed works present a portrayal of human life and lived experiences

Every person goes through ups and downs. For some, disappointments are harder and longer to deal with. Does that mean that the person should give up on life?

Interestingly, Sabarna started writing when he was a university student and stopped it after getting a job.

Of course not! If one carefully reads the words printed in the five books penned by Sabarna Roy, while one is bewildered by the amorphous nature of life, he is also overwhelmed by the spirit of life. New Life in Pentacles is a brightest example of that, highlighting the story of a man, Kingshuk, who is abandoned by his mother at a very tender age, has a very intense life questioning almost every incident in his life till he finds success. The novel has an engaging narrative communication the author’s point of view through poignant text. Most of all Sabarna does not villainize any of his characters. He looks at all his characters with understanding and humanity.

The Last Plunge is a unique story. The protagonist dies at the end possibly out of a mysterious disease. Yet, the reader doesn’t feel grief and is drawn more towards life itself. Clouds of Life is a beautiful poem that ends with death yet it is not sadness that you feel reading the poem. It is very similar to the feeling of having viewed a wondrous sunset.

Death as a metaphor occurs very often in Sabarna’s works but the portrayal of death will make you look at life with acceptance and poise.

The other two metaphors that repeatedly occur in Sabarna’s works are: solitude and silence.

Sabarna untiringly, having traversed in great detail through the emptiness of post-modern urban life, tries to bring bright rays of hope in human life through his writings. The four long narrative poems of Pentacles are great examples of this. No wonder, he is now a prominent name in the domain of English literature the world over.

Sabarna, a rare blend of a storyteller and a poet, initiated an intellectual storm in his five books beginning with Pentacles, a work that remains a major subject of discussion in Indian literary circles.

What is great about Sabarna’s narratives is the fact that the readers often associate themselves with the characters of his books. All his narratives are deeply rooted in reality and modernity. A Letter from Mrinalini Dutta Gupta is a sad tale yet it fires you up with hope to dream of miraculous possibilities in life.

A Meeting in a Café is an excellent edgy tale between a father and a son while Abyss deals with the conflicts of a mother and her daughter.

Sabarna’s mastery in understanding human nature, their circumstances and their experiences is repeatedly reflected through the set of characters we find in: Pentacles, Frosted Glass, Winter Poems, Random Subterranean Mosaic and Abyss.

They are a class apart compared to the run-of-the-mill novels and poems because Sabarna writes literary fiction that propels us to look at our own lives. All the characters of these five books seem to act as clairvoyants whispering within you about your own deeds whether dark or white, good or evil. In other words, Sabarna’s books are a great study of ethics and aesthetics of human life.

Sabarna is a senior engineering professional. Besides gliding in the waves of imagination, intuition and observation thereby creating literary books, he also is an expert on matters pertaining to complex engineering and technological matters.

He publishes complex technical articles in peer-reviewed National and International Journals.

Interestingly, Sabarna started writing when he was a university student and stopped it after getting a job. But he again started writing after 19 years.

We will now briefly analyze his creations with the eye of a critic beginning with Pentacles, comprising a novella and four long narrative poems that intellectually stimulated its readers and established him as an author with a difference.

Pentacles unfolds the mysteries of life proving very often we have to walk on the razor’s edge to take decisions about our lives. The book, particularly its long story New Life, received massive acceptance among the readers due to Sabarna’s efforts to unravel the psychological conflicts that its protagonist underwent within himself as his mother deserted him at a very young age lucidly and at times, lyrically.

Frosted Glass, a story cycle of 14 long-short stories set in Calcutta and a poem cycle of 21 narrative poems, has a man namely Rahul as the central character. He is a different man in every new story. The book shows how the characters associated with Rahul (some of them very brilliant by themselves) made, marred and shaped his life.

Abyss, a full-length play of suspense in two acts with an interval in between, received massive acclaim by its readers as they found themselves glued to the book’s pages to know what next. The character Renuka is particularly noteworthy.

The poems contained in Winter Poems were inspired by the relatively mild season that prevails in Kolkata following the season of festivities, the Durga and the Kali Puja, and portray myriad shades of human life. Some of them deal with the imaginations of death and home while still others with the idea of loss and coming to terms with gradual wasting of life. Many aspects of human life and commonplace human impulses are examined and brought to life through a range of imaginations and varied metaphorical associations. The poems are sure to delight the readers and generate a whole range of emotions within them.

Random Subterranean Mosaic covers poems, short-shorts, opinions, observations, and conversations. It is a kaleidoscope of random, yet mysteriously structured to a pattern, fiction, semi-autobiographical and biographical pieces. Accommodating such a wide variety of genres is possible only by a master storyteller like Sabarna. He is presently working on his sixth project.
