All that you should know about myopia

The cuteness factor aside, specs should not be a regular part of a child’s life. Which is why it’s alarming to see so many children wearing glasses these days. To keep your children’s eyesight perfect, don’t trap them within four walls. Send them out to play.

Actor Tom Cruise was rather cute in the movie Jerry Maguire, but he was out-cuted by another man – a little boy named Jonathan Lipnicki, who played Ray, a nerdy child in big spectacles.

The cuteness factor aside, specs should not be a regular part of a child’s life. Which is why it’s alarming to see so many children wearing glasses these days.

* Signs suggestive of myopia include squinting of eyes, sitting too close to the TV, headaches and watering eyes.
* Take children in for annual eye exams.
* Teach children to maintain a good distance between the eyes and the book while reading, and not to read in poor light.
* Set up the computer workstation keeping the screen at least three feet away from your child’s sitting position.
* Limit screen time (TV, computers, smartphones) to not more than two hours a day.
