Budget carrier AirAsia India wants to do away with the 15-kg free check-in baggage that passengers are allowed to carry, and has sought aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA’s), permission.

“I have sent a proposal to the DGCA. I haven’t heard back yet. The moment they say that, I will switch (to zero baggage). Give people who want to fly with no bags an opportunity to get a lower fare,” Mittu Chandilya, chief executive, AirAsia India, told Hindustan Times.

AirAsia India initially decided not to allow free check-in baggage when it launched operations on June 12 last year, but was forced to do so after the the DGCA’s intervention.

The airline, which has a fleet of 5 Airbus A320s and 540 staff, will be the first no-frills carrier to operate out of Delhi airport’s Terminal 3 and will fly to Bangalore, Goa and Guwahati. “Delhi will be our northern hub,” Chandilya said. There are no plans to fly to Mumbai, Chandilya said.

“As an airline we are not profitable as yet, but we are very close to it,” he added.
