Amazon currently operates two warehouses — also called “fulfillment centres”— on the outskirts of Mumbai and Bangalore. The new facilities will be opened in Delhi, Chennai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and the outskirts of Gurgaon.

The expansion will allow the e-commerce major to extend its same-day and next-day delivery services in these cities. Amazon’s India website, set up in June last year, operates a marketplace, which allows other vendors to sell their products to customers.

Though a late entrant in the Indian market, the company is sparing no efforts to grab marketshare from other e-commerce players active in India such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and Jabong, among several others.

The new warehouse ‘fulfillment centre’ in Chennai is already operational. The remaining four would become up and running next month.

“The launch of these five new fulfillment centres is part of our continued investment in providing fast and reliable delivery across vast selection of products, and enabling sellers of all sizes to achieve nationwide scale,” said Amit Agarwal, vice-president and country manager, Amazon India.

The move will also help the company offer storage services to thousands of retailers and small and medium businesses (SMBs) across the country.

These new centres are aimed at meeting the warehousing needs of retailers and SMBs in Haryana, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
