Former Golf pro-turned-businessman Greg Norman is betting big on India. In the next five years, the Australia-born world number one golf champion will try to make his mark in different sectors in the country – ranging from real estate to retail to wines.
Norman's company, Great White Shark Enterprises, is in talks with realty major Unitech to design golf courses in its various townships as well as build "gated communities within gated communities". It is already designing a signature golf course at the Unitech Grande luxury residential project in Noida.
"We have designed three golf courses in India, two in the national capital region and one outside Mumbai. We plan at least five more in the next five years— it takes more than two years to design a golf course," says Bart Collins, President, Great White Shark Enterprises, a $200 million group.
The "gated communities within gated communities" will be Norman's unique selling point in India. His company will take 10 per cent of a residential project (70 villas/ apartments if the project has 700 on offer) and convert them into a signature real estate product.
"The homes will be either called Norman Estates or Norman Residency, and will have features that will even put luxury to shame," says Collins.
Norman is also planning to set up 100 exclusive sportswear stores. The first outlet was opened in Gurgaon. Greg Norman apparel will also be available at departmental stores like Lifestyle and Shopper's Stop. Other business ventures from the group will be Greg wines, from California and Australia. "We are also planning to bring in golf equipment as well as organise golf tournaments in the country by our very own event management company," says Collins.
