Trai targets four-fold faster broadband speed, 600 million users
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended quadrupling broadband speed definition to 2 megabits per second (MbPS), from the present 512 Kbps by December 2015, and has set a target of hitting 600 million broadband connections by 2020.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended quadrupling broadband speed definition to 2 megabits per second (MbPS), from the present 512 Kbps by December 2015, and has set a target of hitting 600 million broadband connections by 2020.
In its recommendations on broadband released on Friday, Trai said the multi-layered decision-making structure for the sector needs to be overhauled. It said if India does not improve its infrastructure availability, its ranking in internet penetration, already low, could dip further. At present, India ranks below Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
The regulator has suggested that the telecom operators be allowed to offer hardware along with internet tariff schemes.
Trai has stressed the need for ensuring availability of spectrum, and a clear rollout roadmap. Delinking wireless planning and coordination from the telecom department; spectrum audit; sharing, trading and refarming of spectrum; quick rollout of national optical fibre network and use of cable and satellite for broadband connectivity are other measures suggested.
