8 skill development centres to be made operational this year
The Punjab government on Saturday approved setting up of eight development centres at a cost of Rs 60 crore to improve employability of youth and to meet the demand of booming service and tertiary sectors.

Announcing this, an official spokesperson said the state government intended to spend Rs 60 crore on the multi-skill development programme for setting up six skill development centres at Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar and three skill development centres concerning the health sector to be opened at Amritsar, Patiala and Faridkot.
The spokesperson said three centres related to the construction sector would also be opened in the Majha, Malwa and Doaba regions of the state. He said that to make the functioning of these centres effective, assistance had been sought from National Skill Development Corporation.
The spokesperson also conveyed that in these skill development centres, short-term courses of professional nature would be run and these courses would be of three-, six- and nine-month duration. The spokesperson said that after the completion of the course the government would make sure to get employment for a large number of pass-outs in various industrial organisations in the state.
