He said that most of the traffic offenders were on roads for the purpose of partying on the eve of New Year. He added that effective traffic control resulted in no fatal mishap in the city despite heavy fog last night.

Adequate number of policemen, including women, were deployed to check any untoward incident on the eve of new year.

The revellers were penalised either for drunken driving or riding two-wheelers without helmet or moving at a high speed, he said.

Meanwhile, a youth belonging to Punjab was caught by police for allegedly trying to molest a girl when she was protesting among others at the city centre against incidents of rape, especially the one that took place in New Delhi recently.

In the wake of Delhi's rape incident, the New Year celebrations were a low key affair in the city with most of the hotels cancelling the party and residents preferring to stay indoors as Chandigarh experienced the coldest day yesterday in the current spell of winter.
