The AIEWA is likely to approach the Punjab and Haryana high court for implementation of OROP.

This reply is in response to the legal notice dated June 28 served by the AIEWA for immediate implementation of OROP announced by former finance minister P Chidambaram in the interim budget session of Parliament on February 17, which was later ratified by Arun Jaitley in the budget session in June.

The AIEWA had issued legal notices to secretary, ministry of defence, chiefs of Army, Navy and Air staff, as well as the principal controller of defence accounts (P), demanding immediate implementation of OROP in respect of armed forces personnel, families and dependent pensioners.

The legal notice had stated that former defence minister AK Antony had held a high-level meeting of the officials of the defence ministry and the controller general of defence accounts and directed that OROP be implemented. A notification was issued in April 2014 by the department of ex-servicemen welfare.

President Pranab Mukherjee, while addressing the joint session of Parliament on June 9, had declared that OROP would be implemented.

"More than four months have passed but nothing has come out of the announcements and promises made by the authorities, and pensioners are worried. However, now the association has received a reply from the Air Headquarters. We intend to move the Punjab and Haryana high court for implementation of OROP," said Sehgal.
