People who had made the bookings are upset and are distraught at the waste of time and money the move will mean for them. Some of whom had even got wedding invitations printed.

At the last minute, finding a booking in other centres is quite hard, which means many people will have to look towards SAS Nagar or Panchkula or private banquets that charge exorbitant prices.

Rajat Taneja, who had booked the community centre for his brother’s wedding scheduled for April 13, said, “I got the booking on December 17 last year, but on Wednesday, I got to know of the cancellation.

My wedding cards have been printed and even distributed to the far-flung relatives. Why did the MC book the date, if there were plans to renovate the centre?”

Mukesh Raturi, whose marriage was fixed for April 21, said, “I was informed about the cancellation of the programme only on Tuesday. The invites have been printed and now I do not know what to do. Even my cousin sister’s marriage was fixed for April 19, but they cancelled all the bookings. We have lost faith in MC now,” he claimed.

When contacted, MC joint commissioner, Rajiv Gupta said, “I am not aware of the issue, but will look into it. Appropriate action will be initiated against the officer concerned for booking the community centre, when he knew, the centre is to be renovated.”

In spite of repeated attempts, officer on special duty, who is in charge of booking, AK Dadwal could not be contacted.

Area councillor Gurbax Rawat transferred the entire blame on MC’s officer on special duty-2, AK Dadwal. She claimed that when the road wing had informed the booking office about the renovation, then it was unjustifiable to take bookings.

“I will raise the issue in the coming House meeting. It is unfortunate that MC officials lack coordination. On the one hand, they are booking functions; on the other, they floated tenders for renovation.”

NOT FOR THE FIRST TIME
In September 2013, nearly 20 bookings were cancelled at the Sector 15 community centre on the same reason for renovation. Then too, people were caught by surprise and a lot of hue and cry was raised, but apparently to no avail.
