The accused has been identified as 35-year-old Vikramjit Singh Pandher, a lieutenant colonel, posted with the National Security Guard (NSG) at Manesar in Haryana.

The incident took place around 3pm on Thursday when the army officer was heading towards Chandigarh from Zirakpur in his Chevrolet Cruze car.

When he reached the airport light point, head constable Nirvair Singh signalled Pandher to stop as his car was not bearing a high-security registration plate (HSRP).

Nirvair asked Pandher to show the car documents which resulted in heated arguments between the two.

Pandher allegedly tore Nirvair's challan book, grabbed his collar and slapped him on the face. Pandher also punched him on his face and in the chest, it is alleged. Nirvair called the police and Pandher was arrested.

Assistant superintendent of police, Chandigarh Police UT (South), Navdeep Brar said: “The accused has been booked under Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from performing duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Nirvair was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, for medical examination where doctors confirmed bruises and scratches on his face. The accused will be produced in the court on Friday.

Meanwhile, Pandher was also challaned by the traffic police for not bearing the HSRP on his vehicle.
