Chugging into history: Ludhiana Shatabi's last run today

On Thursday, the train will depart from New Delhi at 7.05am as usual to reach Ludhiana at 12.25 pm, and will depart from Ludhiana at 4.40 pm for its return journey, reaching New Delhi at 10.05 pm.

Running for the past eight years, the New Delhi–Ludhiana–Moga Shatabdi (12037/38) and (12043/12044) will make its last run on Thursday with railway authorities discontinuing the train. On Thursday, the train will depart from New Delhi at 7.05am as usual to reach Ludhiana at 12.25 pm, and will depart from Ludhiana at 4.40 pm for its return journey, reaching New Delhi at 10.05 pm.

However, on Friday, the train will run as an intercity express (22479/22480) between New Delhi and Lohian Khas. The intercity express will depart from New Delhi at 7 am and after a 10 minute halt at Ludhiana, it will depart at 12.25pm for Lohian Khas arriving there at 2.55 pm. In its return journey, the train will depart from Lohian Khas at 3.35 pm, reaching Ludhiana at 5.55 pm and will depart for New Delhi at 6.05pm, reaching the Capital at 11.35pm.

Similarly, the New Delhi -Ludhiana Shatabdi (the intercity express) will run on same route via Dhuri line, but will halt at 11 stations while running from New Delhi to Lohian Khas, and during its return journey will halt at 12 stations. Earlier, Shatabdi used to halt at just five stations. However, the intercity express has chair cars and second seater coaches whereas the Shatabdi included executive class and chair car coaches.

Just as Shatabdi was running between New Delhi and Ludhiana as 12037/38 on five days a week, and on two days (Monday and Saturday) between New Delhi and Moga as 12043/44, similarly the intercity express will run as 22479/80 between New Delhi and Lohian Khas on five days and for two days (Monday and Saturday) will run between New Delhi and Moga as 22485/86.

While running as 22479/80, the train will halt at Shakur Basti, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, Jind, Narwana, Tohana, Jakhal, Sangrur, Dhuri, Ludhiana, Jalandhar City and Sultanpur Lodhi, while the train will halt at Shakur Basti, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, Jind, Narwana Junction, Tohana, Jakhal, Sangrur, Dhuri, Ludhiana and Jagraon as 22485/86.

The train, which was started in 2011, has been running up a loss because of which railway authorities decided to discontinue with it.

23 percent fare dip

Earlier, passengers travelling from New Delhi to Ludhiana paid 660 and Rs745 for a seat in the chair-car coach and Rs1345 for executive class. Now, passenger will have to pay only 510 for a seat in the chair-car coach and Rs140 for second seater while travelling from Ludhiana to New Delhi or vice versa in the intercity express.
