After two years of trial, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), international governing body of soccer, has reportedly lifted the ban and authorised the covering of the head for religious reasons during football matches.

After two years of trial, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), international governing body of soccer, has reportedly lifted the ban and authorised the covering of the head for religious reasons during football matches.

The decision that came after a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IAFB) in Zurich will apply to both men and women players worldwide. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke as saying that both men and women could cover their heads during play and that it would be a basic head cover of the same colour as the team jersey.

The ruling came following a two-year trial that started in 2012 because in 2011, Iran's women's team had withdrawn from an Olympic qualification match against Jordan in protest against being disallowed to wear headscarves. The Sikhs in Canada also had called for the ban on turban in the field to be off.

Following a request from the Asian Football Confederation, the IFAB allowed for the covering of the head in competitive football to be tested, as it posed a risk of injury to the head or neck, according to FIFA, the BBC report has mentioned.
