Ridiculing chief minister Parkash Singh Badal over the announcement to enhance the cash award for Param Vir Chakra winners to Rs 2 crore, ex-CM Captain Amarinder Singh has said: "Badal should know that the PVC is a wartime award only and we are not having any wars for the past 16 years."

"Either Badal is not aware that there has been no war since Kargil in 1999 or he has done it deliberately, knowing he will not need to pay any money, no matter how much he enhances the grant," Amarinder mentioned in a statement issued here. "We hope and pray that there is no war but we must also acknowledge that our armed forces are engaged in a proxy war that also costs lives, and for exemplary gallantry in which, there is a highest peacetime honour called the Ashok Chakra," he pointed out.

He said Badal should also make it clear that soldiers winning the Ashok Chakra for fighting the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and some North Eastern states were included in his award scheme. "Or he wants us to wait for the war to take place," he wondered, making a case for taking peacetime gallantry medals also into consideration for enhanced cash grant.
