The MTV Coke Studio's song is however old wine in a new bottle, where an old folklore has been re-done with lyrics which continues to connect with the heart.

Pakistani singer Sarwar Gulshan sang it many years ago and in 1982 Gurdas Maan made it popular.

However, with time passing by, the old Punjabi song continues to remain popular amongst the youth who seem to relish versions put forth by artists.

The new version of the song keeps alive the heart and soul of the folk song. It starts with a context new scenarios where even 'Aaj ranjhe kiraye te le le ke heeran, Ishqe di chadar kari jaan leeran' (The purity of love is long lost because of the temporary relationships young men and women indulge in).

While the older version talked about the Punjabi youth roaming on streets, 'ya theke ya thaane' (either in the liquor shop or under arrest by the police), today's youth is portrayed as being over indulged in drugs and drinks.

Another highlight about the new version which strikes a melancholic chord for the land of five rivers Punjab (Panj-aab) is 'Ravi to Chenab puchda ki haal e Satluj da' (Chenab asks Ravi how my fellow Satluj is). As Satluj flows into the neighbouring state of Pakistan, this seperated by borders.

Jugni is another folk song which has a lot of versions even in Bollywood and has been added in the new version to make it ever more enchanting.

While the typical Punjabi culture of lehngas (ghagre), fulkari and jhumkas has been long lost, and a lot has changed in the past few years, the singers are still left asking the same old question, "Ki banu duniya da, sache patshah waheguru jaane' ( What will be made of this world, only the almighty knows)
