The Haryana police have arrested seven more accused in the Dabra gang rape case, taking the total number of arrests in the case to nine. Director general of police (DGP) Ranjeev Dalal told the media on Wednesday that three more men named in the FIR, an accomplice who helped the main accused, and three who harboured them are now under arrest.
The three named accused are Vikas, Pawan and Raj Kumar, who were arrested in Almora (Uttarakhand) and are being brought to Hisar, while details about the other four were withheld by the police. Baljit alias Situ and his accomplice Sunil have already been arrested in the case.
The 16-year-old victim, whose father killed himself after learning of the rape, has said there were 12 men involved.
Will seek fast trial: DGP
DGP Dalal added that the police would request the court for a fast-track trial "to decide the case within three months". He insisted that there was no political intervention in the investigation, seeking to offset allegations that the police had been soft given the fact that most accused belonged to influential families. He sought co-operation from the media and appealed for restraint while reporting sensitive issues.
According to an unconfirmed report, the three accused arrested in Almora were planning to commit suicide. Tablets of Celphos (a rodent killer) were recovered from them at the time of arrest.
