A half-eaten body of a new-born infant was found near Sangha Chowk in Mithapur on Saturday night.
The police have started an investigation into the case and have sent the body to the civil hospital for post-mortem. The age and sex of the infant could not be determined.
Commuters noticed a stray dog biting into the body of the infant and informed the police.
Station house officer (division no-7) Beer Singh said that a preliminary inquiry suggested that an unidentified woman might have thrown the infant immediately after birth into an empty cement bag, inside the plot on Friday night. The stray dog had dragged the bag and started eating the infant's body.
He said that a case has been registered under sections 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the IPC against unknown persons. He said the police had started questioning residents of nearby localities on women who had delivered within the week.
The incident has sent shock waves in area. The police said that details like age and sex of the infant would be known only after the post-mortem was complete.
