The Medical Council of India (MCI) has allowed Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Jalandhar, to admit students and Government Medical College, Patiala, to continue with 200 MBBS seats for the 2015-16 session.

In an earlier inspection by the MCI, the PIMS, which had 150 MBBS seats, was debarred from admitting students and even Government Medical College, Patiala, was not allowed to increase the MBBS seats from 150 to 200.

According to a senior official of the MCI, the decision was taken at a two-day meeting of the executive committee of the MCI held in Delhi on May 11 and 12. He said Chintpurni Medical College and Hospital, Pathankot, was not allowed to resume admissions. It will be the fourth consecutive year when the college will be denied the permission.

In the earlier inspection of PIMS and Patiala colleges, the MCI had found that only two patients were admitted to the Chintpurni Medical College and Hospital and there was no patient in the intensive care units (ICUs) at PIMS. The colleges do not have proper infrastructure and face severe faculty crunch. The MCI had also decided that Chintpurni Medical College and Hospital would forfeit the Rs 10-crore security; the college got the permission to admit students last year following a Supreme Court order.

Besides, the MCI team had found 25 deficiencies in the college infrastructure and human resource when it came to Government Medical College, Patiala. There was also a severe shortage of resident doctors at the college. Following this, the college was denied permission to have 50 additional MBBS seats.

Later, all three colleges filed a compliance report with regard to the deficiencies pointed out during the MCI inspection. The MCI accepted the compliance report of the PIMS and Government Medical College, Patiala.

Total MBBS seats reach 1,000

Following the addition of these seats, the number of MBBS seats in Punjab will reach around 1,000. Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, will hold the first round of allotments of MBBS/BDS seats on June 19 and 20.
