The matter came to light when BJP councillor Satinder Singh sought a reply from the MC on the vacant properties in the city. During the MC meeting on Wednesday, MC commissioner Bhawana Garg admitted that, “We do not have record of most of the properties in villages of Chandigarh and Manimajra. She requested councillors to prepare a list of the MCs’ properties that are lying abandoned or are encroached.”

BJP councillor Satinder had asked about money spent on construction of its shops, booths and showrooms; along with the year of construction and completion. Interestingly, even though the MC’s estate branch should have this data readily available, the branch in its reply to Singh stated that they had written to the engineering department several times, but had not got any reply. The branch only replied that there were 262 booths lying vacant in various parts of the city and they would soon formulate a policy on their allotment.

Ex-mayor Subhash Chawla questioned as to under which policy the booths were constructed and more than 300 booths in the city are lying abandoned and the civic body was suffering huge loss. “Also, we are totally confused, over the sale of the MC’s property as there is apprehension that the UT has banned the sale, but we have not seen any written orders in this regard,” he added. MC commissioner Bhawana Garg assured the House that a proper report of all the properties would be prepared.
