A day after the municipal house meeting where the Congress with the help of nominated councillors cancelled the under construction project of 136 pucca booths at Mauli Jagran, BJP leaders said it was for the first time in MC's history that an approved project had been cancelled.
They also raised question on the functioning of nominated councillors, who they alleged are rubber stamps of the Congress.
The BJP raised the question on the working of civic body, which forced the Congress to cancel the project they had approved in 2010. They said even its construction started in 2011 after the approval of the UT chief architect. What is forcing the Congress to cancel the same, they questioned.
Chandigarh BJP chief Sanjay Tandon said, "It is a brutal murder of democracy and I want to know who will be responsible for the amount of nearly Rs 25 lakh. Will it be the then mayor, commissioner or secretary, who approved the project?"
He asked what justification the nominated councillors have by supporting the Congress on the issue. It seemed that they were merely acting as rubber stamps in the hands of Congress, he alleged.
Former Member Parliament and BJP leader Satya Pal Jain said, "It is an act of arbitration and highhandedness based on the political consideration of the Congress. It was the Congress only which approved it and now on the behest of senior party leader they have cancelled it. The Congress will have to pay for it."
"Nominated councillors are not playing their role in the House, rather they are acting as puppets in the hands of the Congress. We will demand for the cancellation of their voting rights," former union minister Harmohan Dhawan said.
The civic body had earmarked one acre of land for the project with the budget allocation of Rs 86 lakh, of which Rs 25 lakh had already been spent on the project.
The issue rocked the house in the meeting held on August 29 when the Congress raised the issue that when estate office had the right for booth allotment then how the corporation was constructing booths in Mauli Jagran without having any allotment policy for it.
BJP councillor Rajesh Gupta alleged that the Congress was playing cruel joke with the poor residents of the city. It was the Congress only which approved the project for poor people and now they were playing dirty politics to cancel it. "We will move court," he added.
