The collection of road samples being carried out in Panchkula ran into controversy yet again as the team of one of the organisation deputed for the job did not follow the norms.

The team from Shri Ram Institute of Industrial Research (SRIIR) collected samples from Sector 12/11 Road on Wednesday in presence of Panchkula municipal corporation (MC) mayor Upinder Kaur and other councillors.

However, the samples that were collected in plastic bags were not sealed and stamped, which is against the norm. “When I pointed this out, the staff members of the institute told me that they were not carrying any seal or stamp with them,” Kaur said adding that the SRIIR staff had assured her that all future samples will be properly sealed and stamped.

These samples will later be tested by SRIIR to ensure that the quality materials are being for the road carpeting being done in the city. The samples are being collected by two other agencies apart from SRIIR.

To ensure that the samples are not tampered with, the mayor retained one sample. “After receiving report from SRIIR, I will get the sample in my possession examined by another agency to see if there is a difference in the reports,” Kaur said.

Earlier, resident welfare associations (RWAs) had said that in addition to not sealing and stamping the samples, the agencies had flouted norms by collecting samples in the absence of concerned officials.

This time, superintendent engineer Anil Mehta was not present on the site and did not turn up despite the mayor calling him several times. Mehta could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
