Panjab University syndicate approves fee hike of 2.5% for 2015-16

The students pursuing higher education in colleges affiliated to Panjab University (PU) will have to shell out more fee, as a hike of 2.5% for 2015-16 in all courses with a maximum limit of Rs 1,000 per annum has been approved by the syndicate on Sunday.

There are around 188 colleges affiliated to the university offering graduate and post graduate courses. Of total, 11 colleges are in city.

After 2.5% hike, the new total fee, charges and funds for BA, BCom and BSc in affiliated colleges at Punjab will be Rs 10,760, 19,500 and 12,100 respectively. The new total fee, charges and funds for BA, BCom and BSc in affiliated colleges at Chandigarh will be Rs 13,250, 19,500 and 14,550 respectively. The new total fee, charges and funds for MA, MCom and MSc in PU affiliated colleges at Punjab and Chandigarh will be Rs 15,070, 18,450 and 17,650 respectively.

Cash award for sportspersons increased

In order to promote sports, PU has decided to increase the incentives and cash awards for the PU players for their achievements in all India inter-university competitions and other national games/championships. PU vice chancellor (VC) Prof Arun Kumar Grover said that for the first position holders in individual events at all India inter-university competitions, national games, national championships, national sports festivals for women, PU syndicate has enhanced the cash awards from Rs 11,000 to Rs 15,000. The new award money for first position holders in team games has been increased to Rs 11,000 from Rs 7,500. The second and third position holders in individual events will get Rs 11,000 and Rs 7,500. The second and third position holders in team events will get Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 respectively. The new record holders in individual events at inter-college level will now get Rs 7,500 from the earlier Rs 2,100.

Patent certificate granted to PU professor

Patent facilitating centre (PFC) of Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), Government of India, has granted patent certificate to the Panjab University (PU) professor Shishu of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The patent application of PU assistant professor Gurpreet Kaur has also been approved by TIFAC for filing a patent in India.

The information was given by PU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Arun Kumar Grover while presiding over the PU syndicate meeting on Sunday. Grover informed that Shishu was granted patent with the title 'Sustained release pharmaceutical compositions containing curcumin and beta-cyclodextrin' on February 9, 2015.

Grover also informed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the upgradation of department of zoology and department of biochemistry from CAS-I to CAS-II and DRS-I to DRS-II programmes respectively. Under the schemes, the department of zoology would get Rs 161.55 lakh and salary of two project fellows for period of five years. The department of biochemistry would get Rs 125.00 lakh plus salary of two project fellows for period of five years.
