Parties take to show of strength on last date of campaigning
With campaigning for student council elections concluding on Thursday afternoon, Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) carried out a massive rally to show its strength on the campus.

Over 1,000 workers of PUSU started the rally in the afternoon from biomedical sciences department from where the party has fielded its presidential candidate, Anil Sharma.
The party members went up to their tent near gate number one and then to administrative block, while traversing through sciences block before reaching Student Centre. Throughout the way, the students threw paper shreds in the air and party panel's Photostat copies.
Addressing the party workers, Sahejpal Singh, who joined the campaign on Thursday after remaining absent from electioneering for a week, said this was the biggest ever rally in recent times at the campus and PUSU had shown its strength to other parties.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also held a rally in the UIET department at 1 pm. However, could not manage much of crowd. ABVP workers also threw rose petals in the air to impress the voters.
Other parties, including NSUI and SOI, also campaigned hard in the departments to woo voters. The campaign ended at 4 pm. Officials said no major violations were reported.
Meanwhile, most departments saw thin attendance on Thursday. The university officials said it had declared September 9 as a holiday in lieu of August 30, which was made a working day due to elections.
The officials were also apprehending low turnout of voters due to extended holidays. Though past one week was comparatively peaceful, prior to that a number of incidents of violence were recorded and students are believed to have headed for home due to apprehensions of violence.
