PGI docs to get online lab reports for indoor patients
Indoor patient attendants at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, will not have to scurry around to collect laboratory reports of the biochemistry department to show them to doctors on rounds, as by September-end, these will be made available online to the physicians and could be seen on smart phones.
Sources said the work on the project was at an advanced stage and will benefit a large number of patients as almost 90% of the samples sent for testing were from the department, which carries out around 4,000 blood, urine and other samples.
These are collected and processed everyday in the emergency laboratories.
It conducts 12,000-14,000 tests daily including emergency and indoor patients.
THE CURRENT SYSTEM
Under the current system, in the emergency or at the advanced trauma centre, doctors hand over the samples to patients, who submit these to various laboratories.
After a few hours, they are asked to collect the reports physically. It is a common experience that patients generally end up mixing up the reports and a large number of these remain untraced.
Attendants are also forced to make multiple visits to labs to get the reports.
THE PROPOSED SYSTEM
The new system is likely to solve these issues. Once the samples reach the lab, the reports will be automatically uploaded on the common emergency block server.
From the server, doctors can access all reports on the computer by feeding the Central Registration Number (CRN) of the patient. The reports can be seen anywhere.
