Call it naivety or plain honesty, but Ali said, “Reality shows are scripted. The dialogues, the comments of the judges and even the marks given to each contestant, all of it is scripted.” Ali was in Amritsar on Saturday to perform at the inauguration of restaurant Café Oz.

Runners up of reality show Waar Parivar in 2008, Ali also participated in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Indian Idol and X Factor. Sharing his experience, Ali said that the show was a life-changing event, since it gave him a chance to sing, which was his passion. “Except bhajans, I can sing every genre,” says Ali.

While Ali maintains that good voice is essential, he adds, “With talent, luck and contacts play a major role in determining success after a show. Thanks to contacts, I was invited to participate in X Factor and even Indian Idol 6, but I could not be a part of the latter.”

Trained in classical singing, Ali shares that his school discovered his singing talent for the first time and after school he participated in various singing competitions at local and state level. He lays a lot of stress on classical training since he feels that any trained classical singer can sing in any genre with ease.

After getting a platform from Waar Parivar, Ali has been busy with live shows and concerts, which he says he enjoys the most. He has also given background vocals for a song in film Tum Mile and Rajneeti and sung the National Anthem and Vande Matarm for Raajneeti.

“But I don’t get a lot of work in Bollywood, since I don’t stay in Mumbai. I don’t like living there since there is a lot of competition there and at times one witnesses such difficult incidents that it shatters your belief,” said the singer, whose family hails from Kanpur, but the singer himself lives in Delhi.

Ali has also judged reality shows at district and state levels and said that although he feels delighted to see fresh talent, at times parents push children a lot and force them to be a part of the show, even if the child does not have singing talent.

This was the first time Ali was in Punjab and said that he was all excited to perform here and would love to come back.
