IGP stated that the decision was taken as the nature of duty of police personnel is inherently stressful. "The stress is further compounded by long hours of duty, work on weekends and holidays, inadequate housing and frequent changes in duty timings," Upadhyay said in a press release adding that due to this most police personnel miss out on milestone events such as birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

The release added that controlling authorities would ensure that police personnel are given duty rest on days chosen by the staff.

It was clarified that such duty rest shall be accounted from the already entitled leave and no additional entitlement will be created.

The contents of the order will be read out in roll calls and staff briefings over the next one week.

While birth dates are available on record in the personnel information system (PIS), a form will be issued for intimating the date of marriage anniversary or alternative event and all UT police personnel may fill submit the same to UT police headquarters through their controlling officers.
