Robbery attempt outside bank: Two get 7-yr RI

The court of district and sessions judge, RK Sondhi, on Monday awarded seven-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) to Naresh Kumar and Anil for attempting robbery near a branch of the HDFC Bank in Sector 25. The incident had taken place on September 4, 2013.

The victim, Madhu Mittal, runs a petrol pump in Sector 25. In routine, she used to go to the bank for depositing cash between 11am to 12 noon. Around 11.30am she had reached with Rs 4.2 lakh at HDFC Bank branch in Sector 25. She was carrying a handbag containing money on her shoulder while the briefcase in her hands had documents. When she just alighted from her Innova car, a person with covered face rushed towards her and allegedly tried to snatch the briefcase but Mittal did not let him take it.

The accused fired at two shots at her from a pistol, but Mittal used briefcase as shield. After that she managed to push the person with the help of the briefcase but he again fired another shot which brushed past her ankle. After the hit, she fell on the ground but was still holding the briefcase. Meanwhile, bank's guard Mukhtyar Singh came rushing towards the person but he fled at the back of the bank.

The police solved the case in a day and the then commissioner of police, Ambala-Panchkula, Rajbir Deswal, and the then deputy commissioner of police Ashwin Shenvi held a press conference and gave details about the plot.

Convicted Naresh used to work as a bank guard at the HDFC Bank branch outside which the incident had taken place, but at the time of the crime, he was shifted to IndusInd Bank, Sector 11. He had information that Mittal used to come with cash in lakhs to deposit in the bank.

As per the plan, he kept himself ready behind the bank and sent his accomplice with the gun. Anil fired at Mittal but she saved herself due to the briefcase.

Naresh was held guilty under sections 398 (attempt to commit robbery when armed with deadly weapon) and 393 (attempt to commit robbery), while Anil was held guilty under section 398, 393 and 397 (attempt to cause grievous hurt at the time of robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. Both convicts were also fined Rs 5,000 each.
