Head hunters coming to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, want computer science and engineering brains the most. The trend was witnessed in the first week of placement this month. On one of new IITs (built only in 2008) running on a transit campus at the Government Polytechnic for Women here since August 2009, software giants such as Amazon, Samsung, Arista, e-bay, Cisco, and Cognizant have descended to hire from the 2010-14 BTech batch teeming with computer geeks.

In the past two years also, all students in the stream found jobs as opposed to 85% placement in the electrical engineering department and about 90% in mechanical engineering. This year, 40% of the batch is absorbed, so far, and that again includes computer science class mostly but some electrical engineering students as well. No one from the mechanical engineering group is hired, so far.

"Most mechanical engineering companies are economy sensitive and prefer to hire in the first quarter of the year when they most expect the economy to improve," said IIT's training and placement officer Prabsharan Singh, adding: "The companies' response is good this year, in spite of all odds and that we are a new institute."
