India’s ace shuttler Saina Nehwal added another feather to her crown, as she defeated Span’s Carolina Marin in the final to win the Australian Open Super Series on Sunday.

From an age where she used to fiddle with racquets while her parents played badminton, to the stage of becoming a role model for other amateurs, we will have quick look at some inexplicable qualities which Saina possesses.

Will power: To encapsulate within oneself the will power to achieve the set goal wins half of the battle for you. Will power can prove to be a reservoir of energy and confidence. It comes with deep ingrained hunger for goal. To see a dream is easy, but to fulfill it requires great will power and determination and Saina has that in plenty.

Focus: One thing which Saina repeatedly complains about is her ringing phone, as the advertisement companies try to lure her into the glamorous world. But, Saina till date has done only a few advertisements, which has in no way harmed her performance or her training sessions. Success brings with it many added distractions, which at times can lead one astray. To be sure of your goal and stick on to the plan can defer you from falling prey to these attractions. And Saina, till date, has been able keep herself away from distractions.

Know your strengths: Every person has his/her strength and weaknesses. Before entering the court remember that your opponent has studied you and possibly knows your weaknesses. To which Saina has one point agenda, i.e. either turn your weakness into your strength, else attack your opponent on their weak side, before they do.

Discipline: The word says it all. Saina has been tagged as one of the most disciplined sports player, even by her coach P Gopichand. Taking heed from it, one should learn to bring discipline to one’s life. A ready schedule and a ready spirit is what it takes to bring discipline to life. If a person has only one goal, then a person’s whole life sets itself according to it. That’s how discipline sets in.

Putting in consistent effort: Irrespective of your rank, your result and your past defeats, if you work to improve your own game and improve the quality of effort, the improvement in other things follow. No one is perfect and that leaves enough scope for further improvement and a new performance in the next feat. And Saina coach for years, P Gopichand, has repeatedly commented on the quality of effort which Saina puts in her every game.
