Two held for Rs 7-cr extortion bid from Sec-35 jeweller
Two people have been arrested for allegedly threatening a Sector 35 jeweller with the abduction of his son. The accused, Harbir Singh Dhillon and Jagdev Singh alias Bosi, residents of Jagraon, allegedly dropped a threatening letter demanding Rs 7 crore.
Two people have been arrested for allegedly threatening a Sector 35 jeweller with the abduction of his son. The accused, Harbir Singh Dhillon and Jagdev Singh alias Bosi, residents of Jagraon, allegedly dropped a threatening letter demanding Rs 7 crore on the letterhead of banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa into the house of the complainant on February 24. To lend authenticity, the letter was written in Punjabi.
Dhillon and Singh direct music videos and had hatched the conspiracy to finance a film.
After the victim Manoj Jain approached the police, a case under Sections 387 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) was registered at the Sector 36 police station. DSP (south) Surjit Malik investigated the case.
The CCTV footage from the house camera was scanned and it was established that perhaps people known to the victim were behind the crime.
So, the mobile phone call details of the accused were dug out and and the tower location of their phones was spotted near the victim's house the day the letter was received.
Finally, a joint team of police station Sector 36 and crime branch headed by inspector Bhupinder Singh and inspector Ranjodh Singh of was sent to Ludhiana and Jagraon to nab the accused.
They were nabbed at a naka at Jagraon, while travelling in white Pajero (PB29E-1306). Both were arrested and their car has been impounded. During interrogation, they have confessed to their crime. They were produced in court have been remanded to two-day police custody.
