The city police on Thursday used references to the Bollywood hit Rockstar to drive home the message of rising incidents of eve-teasing. Addressing the jam-packed hall of government college for girls, sector 11, senior superintendent of police Naunihal Singh asked the girls to sing out aloud "Sadda haq ithe rakh" from blockbuster Rockstar. By this, he meant to boost the confidence of the girls and encourage them to raise a united voice against the troublemakers.

Promising to initiate "sting operations" to nab the hooligans, the SSP assured that the women cops in civvies would patrol streets and travel in buses frequently used by students. When pointed out, Naunihal also assured to take action against errant police officers.
The SSP was taken aback when he asked the girls if they complained to cops about eve-teasing incidents and only four hands went up. However, to the question if any girl had faced eve-teasing, countless hands went up. To thi , he quipped: "You go to your parents and teachers in case of a problem. Do not hesitate to come to us."

He said the trend of complaints reflected that most of the victims were from the lower middle class, who were walking down the street or traveling by public transport. Asking the girls to come forward to dial 100 and approach police Naunihal said, "Chandigarh girls are proactive, intelligent and technically sound and if all the college girls get together to tackle the menace along with the police then it will be an easy game to handle the hooligans."

COMMON GRIEVANCES
Among the 500 odd girls attending the interaction was a student from Ladakh. In a voice choked with anguish, the girl said she was teased as Chinki, Nepali or Chinese in a derogatory manner. She narrated the references to her as "Chinese who come with no guarantee and no warranty".

Another student Gurpreet said: "Whenever we call 100, they ask us to call up the concerned police station. How will our problem get redressed? To this, the SSP said cops manning the number 100 have been directed to act immediately. A Gypsy will be sent to the girl in distress and the capacity of the control room is also being doubled, he added.

To Neelam's pointed question on punishment in such cases, the SSP said an FIR would be registered against the miscreants so that it acts as a deterrent for others.

When Mamta pointed out about policemen ignoring eve-teasing incident, the SSP said: "I feel ashamed. Agar koi mulazim wardi mein eve-teasing ignore karta hai to uske liye doob marne ki baat hai."

Debriefing
The students were explained the sections under which the offenders were booked. They were also briefed about bailable and non-bailable offences and how the punishment got severe in case of repeated offences. The boys once booked cannot get any job, cannot go out of country and are labeled as accused till the trial is on.

Police attitude
Girls also highlighted that the police started finding faults with them if they complained. They made references to the dressing, mannerism and timings followed by girls. Accepting the fault, the SSP said the cops were being trained to handle the complaints with empathy.
Meanwhile, pointing out the success of the SSP's interaction with GCG students, a cop said four calls had been received on 100 against eve-teasing.
