UT election dept enrolls 5.8 lakh voters

The UT election department has enrolled a total of 5.8 lakh voters in the electoral rolls of Chandigarh parliamentary constituency, said UT administration. This was stated in a press release issued here on the occasion of National Voters' Day on Saturday

This was stated in a press release issued here on the occasion of National Voters' Day on Saturday, which was celebrated by the election department, UT, at Government College for Girls, Sector 11.

Anil Kumar, UT home secretary, was the chief guest at this state-level function. The release said all the eligible electors who had attained the age of 18 years had been enrolled in the voters' list. The enrollment of voters in the electoral rolls is 82.06% against the eligible projected voters of Chandigarh parliamentary constituency.

During the function, the chief electoral officer also stated that a campaign was carried out from October 1 to November 30, 2013 to identify all the eligible voters.

On the occasion of National Voters' Day function, student of the college performed a cultural programme. The officers present on the occasion advocated for the faith in democracy and urged people to vote fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any inducement.

The chief guest facilitated young electors by distributing newly-prepared voter identity cards and also congratulated all citizens. Mohammed Shayin, additional chief electoral officer-cum-deputy commissioner, UT, Chandigarh, also highlighted the importance of a single vote.

Additional chief electoral officer, joint chief electoral officer and all the assistant electoral registration officers of Chandigarh parliamentary constituency were present on the occasion.
