“Locals found the body. It has a bullet wound to the back of the head and one on the left side of the chest. There are other injuries on the body as well,” said assistant police inspector Santosh Chaudhari of Lonand police station.

“It appears that the bullet wounds were not inflicted from a distance. Both the bullets were inside the body,” said API Chaudhari. Next to the canal where the body was found, there is a residential area. Therefore, Satara police are looking for possible CCTV footage.

The Pune police have formed five teams to investigate the incident, according to Ashok Morale, additional commissioner of police, crime, Pune.

Shevani was unmarried, living with his parents, according to police.

“We have found his car, a white Linea, near Maldhakka. We traced his movements and place him near the car at around 10-10:30pm. The rest is under investigation,” said ACP Morale.

His phone is not among belongings found in the car.

“The car was parked at Sangam Park near a petrol pump. He became unreachable at around midnight. His relatives came to the police at around 1-1:30am,” said a crime branch official.

Shevani is a resident of the Sadhu Vaswani chowk area near Pune station.

A handwritten note written - English alphabets in phonetic Hindi - was found on his person, according to police. The note allegedly says that he was killed on a particular “bhai’s” orders as he did not pay 2 crore. The veracity of this letter, however, is yet to be ascertained, police said.

The note was found in the pant pockets of the deceased man. “It is important to determine whether the note was meant to mislead any possible investigation in the matter,” said API Chaudhari.
